Ozone Therapy in Biological Dentistry

Ozone therapy is a natural, safe, and highly effective approach to dental care. Ozone, composed of three oxygen molecules (O₃), is a powerful disinfectant and healing agent. In dentistry, it is used to combat infection, reduce inflammation, promote tissue healing, and support oral health — all without toxic side effects.

The use of ozone in medicine dates back over a century, with dental applications becoming widely recognized in recent decades. Its benefits in biological dentistry are especially valued because it works with the body’s natural healing processes. Ozone therapy can be applied in multiple forms — as ozonated water, ozonated oils, or oxygen/ozone gas — and is never allergenic since it is simply an energized form of oxygen.

Ozone is naturally produced in the environment by the sun and lightning. In dental care, it is applied in controlled, low concentrations to ensure safety and maximize effectiveness.

History of Ozone in Dentistry

Ozone gained recognition in the 1980s when a German dentist demonstrated its effectiveness in treating gum disease.

Why We Use Ozone

Ozone destroys pathogenic organisms without harming healthy tissue, while also improving blood flow, boosting immune response, and accelerating healing

History of Ozone in Dentistry

Ozone was discovered in the mid-19th century by German scientist Christian Friedrich Schönbein, who named it after the Greek word ozein, meaning “to smell.” Its oxidizing properties quickly made it a valuable disinfectant in medicine.

In dentistry, ozone gained recognition in the 1980s when Dr. Horst F. Rilling, a German dentist, demonstrated its effectiveness in treating gum disease. Since then, ozone therapy has expanded to a wide range of dental treatments, from cavity prevention and gum care to infection control in root canals and bone infections.

The advantages of ozone are clear: it kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites quickly, promotes healing, and is entirely natural and non-invasive. Ozone therapy is particularly beneficial for patients with compromised immune systems or those seeking alternatives to antibiotics and surgery.

Why We Use Ozone

Infection control is one of dentistry’s most complex challenges. Oral infections often exist in the form of biofilm — a mix of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even parasites. Biofilm is notoriously difficult to eliminate. Ozone’s “transient oxidative burst” destroys pathogenic organisms without harming healthy tissue, while also improving blood flow, boosting immune response, and accelerating healing.

Ozone therapy allows us to:

  • Sterilize teeth and gums before restorations
  • Arrest tooth decay naturally
  • Treat inflammation and infection in root canals, gums, and bone
  • Support faster recovery with fewer complications

By combining ozone therapy with biological dentistry principles, we address the root causes of oral disease while supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

Ozone in Our Dental Practice

Used in Our Water System and During Procedures

We integrate ozone directly into our water systems, ensuring sterilized instruments, surfaces, and treatment areas. Every dental procedure, from cleanings to complex restorative work, benefits from ozone’s antimicrobial and healing properties.

Topical Ozone

Topical ozone is applied directly to teeth and gums to:

  • Sterilize teeth before placing fillings, crowns, or other restorations
  • Reduce tooth sensitivity
  • Halt the progression of dental decay
  • Promote healing of ulcers, lesions, and other oral tissue injuries

By targeting infection and supporting tissue repair, topical ozone reduces the need for antibiotics and invasive treatments.

Injected Ozone

In certain cases, ozone is administered by injection to treat deeper oral and facial concerns:

  • Infections within the mouth
  • TMJ (jaw joint) inflammation and dysfunction
  • 11-point lymphatic therapy for enhanced immune support and detoxification

Injected ozone penetrates areas that are difficult to reach with traditional therapies, helping to resolve infection and restore function.

Ozone Irrigation

Ozone irrigation uses ozonated water to flush and disinfect areas of the mouth:

  • Treat periodontal (gum) disease
  • Support overall oral hygiene
  • Enhance healing after tooth and root removal
  • Address infected bone (osteomyelitis)

Ozone irrigation is gentle yet highly effective, reaching biofilm-protected bacteria and promoting faster recovery.

Ozone Products

We also provide ozone-based products from PurO3 for at-home support:

  • Oral hygiene products: ozonated pastes, powders, and gels
  • Oils: Ozonated oils for topical healing and facial health
  • Suppositories: For systemic support and immune enhancement
  • Ozonated Glycerin: Used for tissue healing and anti-inflammatory effects
  • Ozonated Water: Safe for oral rinses and daily hygiene

These products extend the benefits of ozone beyond the office, supporting long-term oral and overall health.
